Tostones Recipe (Fried Green Plantains)

Ingredients:

  • 2 plantains
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Optional: Garlic sauce or a dipping sauce of your choice

Instructions:

  1. Peel the Plantains: Slice off the ends of the plantains and make a shallow cut along the length of the peel. Use your fingers to pry the peel away from the flesh.

  2. Slice the Plantains: Cut the plantains into 1-inch thick rounds.

  3. First Fry: Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully add the plantain slices and fry for 3-4 minutes per side until golden. Remove and drain on paper towels.

  4. Smash the Plantains: Using a tostonera or the bottom of a flat glass, gently press down each fried plantain slice to flatten it.

  5. Second Fry: Return the flattened plantains to the hot oil and fry again for about 1-2 minutes per side until they are crispy and golden brown.

  6. Season: Remove from the oil, drain on paper towels, and sprinkle with salt while they are still hot.

  7. Serve: Enjoy the tostones with a dipping sauce like garlic sauce or as a side dish.
